Hidden within the misty recesses of our minds are shimmers of light we have
acquired along our journey through life. They are jewels which have brought joy
and sorrow, pleasure and pain, yet they remain concealed, tucked away for a rainy
day when we find a quiet moment to sit and reflect on the meaning of it all—God’s
purpose and design.

It is then that the words of truth are illuminated: “For there is nothing covered,
that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known” (Luke 12:2). Our light
has value only when it is uncovered, and once exposed, the radiance of these hidden
lessons of our personal pasts provide inspiration to expel the shadows that threaten
to shroud our hope. We need these sparks of encouragement to keep us going.
Inspiration assures us that “we have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall
forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history” (Christian
Experience and Teachings, pg. 204).

However, looking back is not enough. “We continually have new scenes and new
trials to pass through, where past experience cannot be a sufficient guide. We must
have the continual light that comes from God” (Help in Daily Living, pg. 56). The
recollection of our past experience provides us with confidence that God has been
a sufficient guide before, and this assurance dispels our doubts and fears. If we are
to face new trials without becoming overwhelmed by the darkness, we must receive
this light directly from God Himself—we must be filled with His light today. Then we
will become INCANDESCENT—burning and shining lights breaking through the
darkness with His glorious light.

This book, INCANDESCENT, is a collection of inspirational thoughts and
experiences written by Fountainview Academy’s Grade 11 English class (Graduating
Class of 2020). Their assignment was to read the book Help in Daily Living and write
nineteen devotional readings each based on quotes from this book or the Bible. It is our deep desire that, as
you read daily from these pages, God’s light will shine through our stories.
